Room at the top

This week was more special than most. Tuesday, I was blessed to work with one of my mentors  and closest advisors during a  dairy herd consultation. Dr. Jenks Britt practiced mixed animal medicine for twenty plus years, in Logan county, before retiring to teach veterinarians in both Wisconsin and at WKU. He was one of my pre- veterinary advisors at Western, and during that time, I was able to travel with Dr. Britt, all over the United States and Mexico to learn dairy medicine. He is internationally known for his work with dairy cattle, and is a true pioneer in veterinary medicine.

During his tenure in Logan County, he flew to calls in Indiana, Illinois, and even out west to consult and do embryo transfers. He had his own plane, and would sometimes work 16 to 20 hour days before flying back to Russellville. Every veterinarian that has been mentored by Dr. Britt has become better for it.

We discussed the re-opening of Todd County Animal Clinic, and the increasing number of vets in the area. I told him that  I wondered sometimes if we were oversaturated with vets. He just laughed and said, "There's always room at the top."

I found that statement to be profound. There are many factors that go into a family choosing a vet: location, emergencies, price, availability, quality, friendliness,  cleanliness, just to name a few.

Our goal here is to live up to the expectations of our clients, teachers, and mentors. The bar has been set high by those who have come before us:  there's always a crowd at the bottom, and for those willing to make the sacrifice, there's always room at the top.

Thanks for the advice Dr. Britt; you have been at the top for over thirty years, and you have set the bar high for the rest of us.

From our family to yours, we hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving. All of us in America have a lot to be thankful for, don't forget the real reason for the season.

Sincerely,

Todd County Animal Clinic
